President Donald Trump went before the nation and dropped declassified intelligence showing China grabbed 220 million American voter files, and the media establishment lost its mind.
CBS News, under editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, decided to cut away from the speech early and let Democrat Senator Mark Warner lecture their anchor about “falsehoods.”
And now John Solomon and Sebastian Gorka are going after Bari Weiss and CBS for what they’re calling a political hit job dressed up as journalism.
What Trump Actually Said — and What CBS Did With It
Trump delivered a primetime address from the East Room of the White House recently, announcing the release of newly declassified intelligence documents gathered by the White House Government Transparency Task Force.
The White House stated it was releasing previously classified US Intelligence Community assessments proving that the government had long known American election machines were exposed to attack.
The centerpiece of the speech was the China voter file story. Trump declared that “the People’s Republic of China carried out what is believed to be the largest compromise of election data in history,” claiming China obtained “220 million US voter files,” including names, addresses, phone numbers, and political affiliations.
The intelligence even showed that China assigned a data exploitation unit specifically to the project, and Trump charged that members of the deep state in the intelligence agencies worked to actively suppress and downplay information about the extent of China’s election meddling, covering it up from both the President and the American people.
Trump announced the release of previously classified intelligence he said exposed weaknesses in election infrastructure, declaring, “Tonight, I’m announcing the immediate declassification and release of critical intelligence revealing shocking vulnerabilities in our election infrastructure.”
CBS aired the speech. But not for long.
CBS ended its coverage about five minutes before Trump finished speaking, shortly after the president called on the other two broadcast networks to lose their government licenses for not airing his remarks at all.
ABC News and NBC News chose not to interrupt their regular programming to accommodate the president. CBS at least carried most of it, which is where the story gets interesting.
Before the speech, anchor Tony Dokoupil told viewers, “And honestly, much of what the president has said on this topic has been false. Most notably, of course, the claim that he won the 2020 election when, of course, he did not.”
Then CBS brought on Democrat Senator Mark Warner of Virginia to respond. Warner sits atop the Senate Intelligence Committee — the same committee that, for years, received classified briefings on China’s activities. And he was furious CBS had aired the speech at all.
Warner told Dokoupil live on air, “I was embarrassed that the President of the United States went before our whole country, and networks like yours carried this as news, as opposed to a rehash of falsehoods. And it is incumbent upon you and any responsible journalist to push back on these falsehoods.”
Dokoupil pushed back, telling Warner, “You are calling for context and analysis and pushback. You are on the show right now giving it, and acting as though it’s not happening.”
That exchange is worth sitting with for a second. A sitting US Senator, whose committee received classified intelligence briefings on China’s election activities, went on national television to demand that a news network treat the sitting President’s declassified intelligence release as “falsehoods.” And CBS gave him the platform to do it.
Solomon and Gorka Fire Back
John Solomon, who serves as a special government employee on the White House Government Transparency Task Force and personally reviewed the original documents, pushed back hard on the media’s framing.
Solomon has insisted that China’s voter information can be used to change voter registrations, and that the Chinese Communist Party could potentially create new registrations in other states and vote on a person’s behalf.
The CBS coverage leaned heavily on election consultant David Becker, who claimed there was nothing dangerous about the data China obtained. Becker told the CBS audience, “There’s nothing anyone can actually do with that information. It’s not like you can affect a voter with that information. It’s not like you could change their voter registration with this public data.”
But critics of the CBS coverage pointed out that Becker has his own credibility problems. David Becker had to resign in disgrace from the ERIC board in 2023 due to his partisan activities and undisclosed access to unredacted voter data being provided by almost 30 states. CBS did not mention that to viewers.
Sebastian Gorka, who serves as Deputy Assistant to President Trump and Senior Director for Counterterrorism at the National Security Council, took direct aim at Weiss and CBS for the network’s handling of the story. Gorka has long argued that the establishment media’s reflexive dismissal of election integrity concerns is itself a form of partisan interference — and CBS’ conduct after Trump’s speech gave him fresh ammunition.
The pattern at CBS under Weiss has been a source of ongoing frustration for conservatives who had hoped her arrival might signal something genuinely different. Weiss has served as editor-in-chief of CBS News since October 2025. Donald Trump himself called her new regime “the greatest thing that’s happened in a long time to a free and open and good press.”
But the China voter file coverage told a different story.
What This Moment Really Reveals
Think about what CBS actually did here. The network aired a presidential address, inserted a pre-emptive disclaimer calling the president a liar, cut the feed before he finished talking, and then handed the microphone to a Democrat senator who used his time to demand that journalists treat the speech as disinformation.
Warner, for his part, has a serious question to answer. Warner claimed he heard no new information in Trump’s speech. If that’s the case, his role as Vice Chairman on the Select Committee on Intelligence means he is also responsible for hiding national security election information from Congress and the President.
And the SAVE America Act — the commonsense legislation Trump urged Congress to pass during the speech — deserves a fair hearing. The address comes as Trump is pushing Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, which would require photo identification to vote and proof of citizenship to register to vote. That is not a radical demand. It is the minimum a serious country owes its citizens when foreign powers are actively acquiring their voter data.
US spy agencies began learning about the compromise of voter registration files in 2020, when they discovered that tens of millions of voters’ data in 18 states had been bought, stolen, or hacked by China. That is not nothing. That is a documented, intelligence-backed finding — and the media spent years telling Americans the 2020 election was the most secure in history.
Now declassified documents say otherwise. And CBS’ response was to cut away, load up a Democrat senator, and let him call it all a lie.
Gorka and Solomon are right to call this out. The American people who watched Trump’s speech and then flipped to CBS for analysis were not given journalism. They were given a managed political response dressed in the clothes of a news broadcast.
Bari Weiss came to CBS promising something different. The China voter file coverage suggests the network’s instincts, when it matters most, run exactly where they always have.
