Tom Selleck spent five decades entertaining America without lecturing it.
A Hollywood actress with a fraction of his career decided that makes him a coward.
And what she said on a far-left podcast will have Americans nodding along with Selleck all over again.
What Selleck Actually Said
The setup starts back in August, when the 81-year-old Selleck sat down with CNN’s The Story Is with Elex Michaelson for an interview at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California.
When Michaelson pressed him on President Trump, Selleck gave a measured answer. “Well, he’s certainly a mixed bag,” Selleck replied. “I stay out of the current political world. Why piss off half the country when you’re in the business of entertaining people?”
That’s it. A man who built one of the most enduring careers in television history by showing up, doing the work, and respecting his audience enough not to drag them into his personal political opinions.
To most reasonable people, that sounds like wisdom. To Tatiana Maslany, the Canadian actress best known for starring in the Marvel series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, one of the biggest flops of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it sounds like cowardice.
Maslany Takes Her Shot at Selleck
Maslany appeared on left-wing activist Mehdi Hasan’s Zeteo podcast, where Hasan raised the Selleck interview. He recounted the moment for her: “The interviewer asked him, ‘You’re not one of these celebs who’s slammed Trump.’ And he said, ‘Look, I don’t dabble in politics because I don’t understand why you want to piss off half the country if your job is entertaining the country.'”
Maslany didn’t take it well.
“Artists are like mirrors to the world, to society,” she told Hasan. “We have to name things — it’s, like, such an important, intrinsic part of our job.”
She then rolled the argument out further. “All entertainment is political, because it has a viewpoint, and it has a perspective. It has visual representation of the world we live in or the kinds of things that are funny or acceptable.”
And then she landed where she was always heading. “It’s such a bizarre mentality. It’s so cowardly.”
She also brought NBA legend Michael Jordan into the mix, referencing his famous “Republicans buy sneakers too” logic for staying out of political fights. Maslany wasn’t buying it. “And, to me, those are two very rich men who stand to lose a lot if they stand up for something.”
So there’s the accusation in plain terms. Selleck and Jordan, in her telling, aren’t respecting their audiences or drawing reasonable distinctions between their professional and private lives.
She also added a swipe in the other direction, absurdly warning that Hollywood faces pressure to filter content through a “conservative ideology” and suggesting she’d heard of shows getting canceled for political reasons — though she didn’t name any.
Hollywood’s Woke Hypocrisy on Full Display
Media Research Center Video senior director Eric Scheiner didn’t let it pass without a response.
Scheiner told Fox News Digital that Maslany was displaying the “typical leftist viewpoint that permeates Hollywood” along with “the need to bully people into spouting forth a political opinion even when they choose not to.”
He pointed to the late Dolly Parton as the model Maslany refuses to recognize. “Maslany and her irate ilk could learn from entertainment figures like Dolly Parton, whose recent passing was marked by loving tributes from everyone across the political and media spectrum,” Scheiner said. “Parton quietly supported causes she believed in through private, personal actions. She never aired her politics on the public stage, because she wanted to entertain as many people as possible, not alienate a portion of her audience or encourage the ‘cancellation’ of those who disagreed with her.”
Scheiner added, “Maslany should just leave Selleck and Jordan alone, but much like any neighborhood Karen, she just can’t mind her own business.”
That’s a fair summary of what happened here.
And the contrast almost writes itself. Dolly Parton spent a lifetime building something that genuinely united Americans. She left behind a legacy that nobody — Left, Right, or anywhere in between — wanted to argue with. Tom Selleck built a career on similar principles. Show up. Work hard. Respect the people watching.
Maslany, whose She-Hulk series drew consistent criticism for prioritizing political messaging over storytelling, apparently can’t understand why entertainers might reach more people by entertaining rather than lecturing.
The podcast she appeared on, hosted by Mehdi Hasan, is also not exactly a neutral forum. Per reporting on the appearance, Maslany was praised on the program for her past support for the “Free Palestine” movement and for accusing Israel of committing a “genocide” in Gaza. That’s the context in which she delivered her verdict on Selleck’s cowardice.
But here’s the thing worth sitting with: Maslany describes artists as “mirrors to the world.” Selleck’s career, which ran from Magnum, P.I. through decades of work including Blue Bloods, held up a pretty clear mirror. Audiences loved what they saw. By every commercial and cultural measure, they responded. The man never needed to turn a premiere into a protest to matter.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was a different story, both critically and commercially. Marvel fans made their feelings known. The show leaned hard into the kind of messaging Maslany now demands of all artists, and the audience didn’t exactly rally.
And this gets at the real issue beneath the surface noise. The left-wing entertainment machine has spent years insisting that political messaging and artistic excellence go hand in hand. The ratings tell a different story. Late-night television audiences have been shrinking for years as those shows converted from entertainment to left-wing programming. Woke films and series routinely underperform at the box office. The audience keeps voting with its remote.
Maslany calling Tom Selleck a coward doesn’t change any of that math. It just confirms the mindset that produced the problem in the first place.
Selleck’s position is actually quite simple, and he stated it without apology: his job is entertaining people, and deliberately alienating half of them makes no professional sense. That’s not cowardice. For a man with his track record, that’s called knowing your craft and respecting the people who made your career possible.
The audience figured out a long time ago that Hollywood elites think ordinary Americans need to be corrected, not entertained. Maslany’s comments on the Zeteo podcast just gave that attitude another public airing.
Selleck, characteristically, will probably have nothing to say about it. And that, apparently, is also going to be held against him.
