The Democrat Party’s socialist wing is getting a facelift.
And the people who should be paying the closest attention are the ones most tempted to dismiss it.
Now two of the biggest names in conservative radio are sounding the alarm about what Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is building ahead of 2028 — and the warning is not flattering to anyone who thinks she’s easy to beat.
What Clay and Buck Actually Said
Buck Sexton, co-host of The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show, went after the AOC question with a level of seriousness that caught some listeners off guard.
Sexton said AOC has “learned to be less shrill” and called her “the face of a rebranded woke.” That’s not a compliment. It’s a warning.
“You are going to have an attractive, smiling face telling you why your property is not yours and you should be sent to the gulag, basically,” Sexton said.
He went further, describing the political danger in plain terms: “You’re going to have somebody who is appealing in public, and to the masses, pushing for the exact same policies of the street communists, but doing it with more Mamdani-esque flair.”
His co-host, Outkick founder Clay Travis, agreed without hesitation.
“AOC scares me more than Kamala [Harris] does,” Travis said.
That’s a significant statement. Kamala Harris, after all, was the Democrat nominee who lost to President Trump in 2024. Sexton went on, saying AOC was “far more formidable” than Harris. The implication is hard to miss: the Left is not done. It’s just changing its packaging.
The “Woke 1 Was Crazy” Rebranding Tour
Sexton’s remarks came roughly a month after Ocasio-Cortez made headlines by shrugging off once-fashionable leftist positions like abolishing prisons and defunding the police during an appearance on ABC’s This Week.
Host Jon Karl pressed her on Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong’s past calls to cancel Thanksgiving and abolish prisons. AOC’s response was a borrowed phrase from a New York City councilman.
“I have a local city councilman that has this saying, ‘Woke 1 was crazy,'” Ocasio-Cortez said. “And I think that what’s important is that we have to assess what a candidate is saying now.”
She also argued during that same interview that people should get a pass for those ideas because the COVID-19 pandemic made everyone a bit kooky.
The comment went viral almost immediately. And that’s the point.
What Sexton identified — and what a lot of conservatives are still missing — is that this is not a genuine ideological evolution. The underlying policy agenda hasn’t changed at all. The DSA’s national platform still lists abolishing police as a position. Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged she’s a member of the New York City chapter rather than the national organization and said she doesn’t agree with all its positions. But she hasn’t renounced the substance of what that movement stands for. She’s just learned to talk about it differently.
Sexton’s framing of her as “the face of a rebranded woke” is precisely right. The street-level socialist agenda — government seizure of private wealth, destruction of property rights, dismantling of law enforcement — doesn’t go away when a politician smiles and jokes about the bad old days. It gets a new spokesperson with better camera presence.
Why the Threat Is Real and Shouldn’t Be Dismissed
Socialism has a long and documented record of failure. Every country that has gone down that road — from Venezuela to the Soviet bloc — ended up with the same results: economic collapse, authoritarian control, shortages, and a crushed middle class. The policies Ocasio-Cortez has championed throughout her career, including Medicare for All, massive tax increases on businesses and investment, and government expansion into nearly every sector of the economy, fit squarely within that tradition.
But here’s what Sexton and Travis understand that a lot of people on the Right still don’t: bad ideas wrapped in a compelling package win elections. The policies don’t have to change. The messenger does.
And Ocasio-Cortez is a genuinely skilled messenger. She has built a massive grassroots fundraising operation. She commands enormous media attention. She knows how to talk to younger voters who were never taught the actual history of socialist governance. The “Woke 1 was crazy” line is exactly the kind of rhetorical judo that allows a politician to keep all of her policy commitments while publicly shedding the aesthetic that made those commitments unpopular.
It’s worth noting what she is not doing. She is not saying that defunding the police was wrong on the merits. She is not saying that the push to abolish prisons was misguided as a matter of policy. She is saying, in effect, that the branding was bad and voters should focus on what candidates are saying now. That’s a very different thing.
The street communists Sexton referenced haven’t gone anywhere. Zohran Mamdani, whose name Sexton invoked directly, won the New York City mayor’s race running on an openly socialist platform. The DSA is gaining institutional ground in Democrat primaries. The energy on the left is not moving toward the center — it is moving further left while learning to speak in a more palatable register.
And that is precisely what makes the 2028 picture complicated for anyone who assumes the socialist Left burned itself out after 2020.
The rebranding Sexton described is not a retreat. It’s a strategy. And a politician who can sell government control of your life with a smile and a joke about how crazy things used to be is considerably more dangerous than one who makes the same argument with a clenched fist and a megaphone.
Travis and Sexton aren’t wrong to take this seriously. The question is whether the broader conservative movement will.
Because if 2028 arrives and Republicans are still treating Ocasio-Cortez as a punchline rather than a threat, they may find themselves on the wrong end of a lesson about what happens when a movement learns from its mistakes — even if it hasn’t actually changed its goals.
