Megyn Kelly never pulls her punches, and the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce wedding gave her plenty of material to work with.
The Sirius XM host took one look at the Madison Square Garden spectacle and called it exactly what she saw.
And what she saw reminded her of someone specific — someone who has made a career out of making sure everyone is always watching.
Kelly Calls the MSG Wedding What It Was
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce tied the knot recently at Madison Square Garden in New York City, shutting down a stretch of Midtown Manhattan and drawing what reports described as over 1,000 guests, including a parade of Hollywood names.
The wedding ran deep into the night, reportedly until 4 a.m. on Independence Day, according to a city permit reviewed by the Associated Press.
AMC Theaters CEO Adam Aron was so taken with the whole thing that he posted a detailed account of the evening online — despite guests reportedly signing non-disclosure agreements — before apparently thinking better of it.
Kelly wasted no time. On her Sirius XM show, she told Daily Mail columnist and author Maureen Callahan that the venue choice stopped her cold. “It’s so on the nose in terms of, like, attention-getting, and just so gauche,” Kelly said. “I just thought, ‘No.’ And then I remembered: what does she do?”
And what Swift does, according to Kelly, is make absolutely sure nobody forgets she is in the room.
“She shows up in the players’ box for every single one of his games and makes sure she’s front and center and seen on camera the whole time,” Kelly continued. “You know, you could attend his games without being front and center the whole game, but she makes sure she’s at the center of that box.”
Callahan chimed in with a detail that apparently hadn’t even occurred to her until that moment. “I was thinking about Meghan Markle with this because the new reports are — and I can’t believe it didn’t occur to me organically — she’s filming this,” Callahan said, suggesting the whole event could end up as a Netflix special.
Callahan had already set the table with a line that stuck: “This is like a seven-year-old’s idea of what a grand wedding is. It’s Taylor’s big fat Disney wedding.”
Kelly’s response was brief. “Oh of course.”
The Meghan Markle Comparison Nobody Asked For — But Kelly Made Anyway
Kelly didn’t stop at the venue. She went further and drew a line between Swift’s public presence and the Duchess of Sussex’s well-documented hunger for the spotlight.
“You know, she’s got a little Meghan Markle in her, where, notwithstanding the fact that we all know who she is, she’s got to make sure she’s reminding us all she’s relevant,” Kelly said. “She’s everywhere. ‘Admire me, look at me.'”
Then the kicker: “So, yeah, it actually does kind of track.”
Kelly wasn’t alone in raising an eyebrow at the venue. Fox News’ Sandra Smith put it plainly on a recent episode of America Reports: “Do you really think it sounds romantic to get married in Madison Square Garden with a thousand people?” Her co-host John Roberts offered a one-word answer: “No.”
But Kelly’s Markle comparison is the part that will linger. Meghan Markle has spent years building a brand around grievance, victimhood, and relentless self-promotion — a Netflix deal, a podcast, a steady drip of palace drama served up for public consumption. Whether or not the comparison to Swift is entirely fair is almost beside the point. Kelly planted a seed, and the image isn’t easy to shake.
Swift’s fans, for their part, showed up in force outside Madison Square Garden, with some reportedly traveling across the country to be near the event. That kind of devotion is real. But it also proves Kelly’s point in a way — the wedding wasn’t just a private ceremony. It was a production.
There’s something worth sitting with here. Swift has spent years carefully managing a public image that feels both massive and somehow intimate — the girl next door playing arenas. The MSG wedding, with its city permits and celebrity guest lists and NDAs that apparently didn’t hold, blows that image up pretty completely. You can’t shut down Midtown Manhattan and still claim you’re just a regular girl who loves football and her cats.
Kelly has never been shy about saying what a lot of people are thinking but won’t say out loud. Whether that’s a feature or a bug depends entirely on who’s listening. But the comparison she drew — Swift’s need to always be the most visible person in any room, the same quality that made Meghan Markle so exhausting to so many people — landed because it had just enough truth in it to sting.
And the wedding footage is almost certainly being filmed. So get ready for the Netflix special.
