The Democratic Socialists of America, led by Zohran Mamdani, are racking up primary wins.
Somebody with a massive platform finally said what most Americans already know.
And Joe Rogan put it in terms so plain that DSA candidates are going to wish he had stayed quiet.
Rogan Breaks Down Where Socialism Always Ends Up
The conversation happened on Rogan’s podcast, where his guest was conservative commentator Steve Hilton. The topic was the Democratic Socialists of America and the wave of primary wins the openly Marxist organization has been racking up in New York, where Mamdani’s candidates swept to victory and beyond.
Rogan did not mince words about where the socialist project leads once it moves past slogans and into actual governance.
“Very few of these quote unquote Marxists that you find on social media are even aware of the consequences, the historical consequences of these strategies and what it ultimately leads to,” Rogan said.
Then he laid it out in the simplest terms possible.
“It’s like checkers, it’s like real simple: you’re going to have a military that controls everything you do!” he continued. “As soon as you give up everything to the state, well the state has the guns and you have nothing and they tell you what to do.”
That is not a complicated argument. It is a historically accurate one. Every country that has handed its economy to the state has eventually handed its people to the barrel of a gun. The DSA’s own platform calls for government seizure of major corporations, the abolition of the Senate, and the elimination of the Presidency as an independent institution — textbook Marxist restructuring dressed up in the language of “equity” and “affordability.”
Rogan also took direct aim at where the DSA’s social media appeal is coming from.
“People are really [arguing], ‘Oh maybe being socialist is cool.’ Like, this is all coming out of social media. 100%,” he said. “It’s not natural that people are sitting around reading Marx and going, ‘What a great idea, let’s implement this.’ They’re not doing that.”
And he is right. The DSA is not winning primaries because young voters have done a careful reading of Das Kapital. They are winning because the party’s social media apparatus has successfully rebranded Marxism as a personality trait rather than a governing philosophy — one with a body count measured in the tens of millions.
Hilton Brought the Iron Curtain Into the Room
Hilton responded by grounding the conversation in something concrete: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s push for government-run grocery stores. Mamdani, a card-carrying member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has been pushing the city to open state-operated stores as an answer to high food prices.
Hilton said he has firsthand experience with exactly that kind of socialist grocery system. He used to visit his grandmother, who lived behind the Iron Curtain in Hungary. The stores there were “terrible,” he said, because that is what central planning produces when it replaces market competition with government mandate.
Mamdani also backed two other DSA candidates in recent New York primaries — Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez — both of them card-carrying DSA members who flipped seats in the state. The socialist left is not a fringe anymore inside the Democrat Party. It is becoming the driving force of it.
And the DSA’s agenda does not stop at grocery stores. Their platform openly calls for abolishing ICE, ending all deportations, pursuing open borders as a long-term goal, and seizing the largest American corporations through “public ownership.” They want to replace the Senate, subordinate the Presidency to Congress, and build what they call a classless society. That is not a progressive reform agenda. That is a blueprint for dismantling the constitutional republic.
But the grocery store proposal is worth lingering on, because it tells you everything about how the DSA thinks. The answer to high prices is never to cut the taxes and regulations that drive costs up. The answer is always more government, more control, and eventually more guns to enforce compliance when the math stops working — which it always does.
Rogan’s Broader Point and What It Means for the Country
Rogan acknowledged that capitalism is “brutal” and said he supports robust “social safety nets” for people who fall through the cracks — single mothers who lose jobs, families who need a hand getting back on their feet. But he drew a hard line at the point where safety nets become a system that kills ambition entirely.
He said he worried about the flip side, where if the safety nets are too cushy it leads to people having “zero ambition.”
That is a distinction the DSA refuses to make. Their platform does not contemplate a safety net. It contemplates a replacement economy, one run by bureaucrats who have never built anything, enforced by the coercive power of the state.
The DSA’s social media Marxists have convinced themselves they are the first people in history smart enough to make socialism work. Rogan’s point — the one they cannot answer — is that the problem was never intelligence. It was always power. Who holds it. What they do with it. And what happens to everyone else when the guns come out.
This is not a theoretical concern. It played out in the Soviet Union, in Cuba, in Venezuela, in every country that handed its economy to the state and waited for prosperity to arrive. The waiting never ends. The shelves empty. The military fills the gap the market left behind.
President Trump has called communism a “cancer” that must be dealt with immediately — language he used during his Fourth of July address and repeated in a speech in Georgia. Trump sardonically congratulated Mamdani on getting “solid Communists” elected after the New York primaries, and later warned that the communists have started to make “their move” in the United States.
He is not wrong about the direction of travel. The DSA is not content with New York City. Their leaders have said openly they want the White House in 2028. They are building infrastructure, winning primaries, and installing mayors who push government grocery stores while the establishment Democrat Party either cheers them on or lacks the spine to say no.
What Rogan did — and what makes his comments worth paying attention to — is strip away the social media packaging and describe the mechanism. Socialism does not fail because its advocates are bad people. It fails because it requires the state to take things people do not want to give. And when people resist, the state has to decide how badly it wants what it is after.
The answer, every single time in history, has been: badly enough to point a gun.
The DSA is winning primaries right now by promising that this time will be different. Joe Rogan just explained, in plain language, why it never is.
