Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez laughed off the entire “Woke 1.0” era on national television.
Joe Rogan watched and had something to say about it.
And what Rogan said next has Democrats scrambling, because the strategists who heard it largely agreed with him.
Rogan Puts Democrats on the Spot
The moment that set all of this off happened when Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) appeared on ABC’s This Week and was asked about the radical positions that defined the Democrat left around 2020. Her answer was to quote a local city council member and laugh.
“I have a local city councilman that has this saying, ‘Woke 1 was crazy,'” Ocasio-Cortez said while laughing. “And I think that what’s important is that we have to assess what a candidate is saying now.”
That was it. No specifics. No apology. No acknowledgment of the real-world damage those positions caused. Just a chuckle and a pivot to the present tense.
Joe Rogan was not buying it.
On a recent episode of his podcast, Rogan challenged Democrats to actually name what they got wrong and explain how they got captured by the radical left in the first place. The question he kept returning to was pointed: how did “Defund the Police” get them when it never got him?
“If you really thought ‘Defund the Police’ and then you just ascribed it to ‘Woke One was crazy,’ well, how did it get you? Because it didn’t get me. How did it get you? How did ‘Defund the Police’ get you?”
Rogan went further, saying Democrats need to do more than wave their hands at an embarrassing chapter. They need to own it, name it, and explain it.
“There’s a way out of it for them, but they have to be honest,” he said. “If you want us to take you seriously, you have to say how you f—ed up.”
He kept going: “You have to say how you ****** up, and you have to say what you really think about how you ******* up. You have to be honest, and you have to be authentic. We have to know that you are embarrassed by your choices and that you kind of went with the hive.”
And then came the blunt assessment that cut to the core of the whole thing: “If you don’t say that, then you’re full of ****. And if you’re full of ****, you’re going to get more and more full of s— over time. And that’s how politicians get soured.”
That is not exactly gentle criticism. But it is an honest one. And the people who study Democrat politics for a living largely backed Rogan up.
The Strategists See Through It Too
Former Republican National Committee spokesperson Elizabeth Pipko put the absurdity of the Democrat memory-loss act on full display.
“Democrats of today tend to turn with the wind,” she said. “Depending on what is most popular with their base, that’s what you’ll hear from candidates during the primaries.”
And then, she noted, the general election arrives and the script gets flipped entirely: “And then, during the presidential election, you’ll notice the Democrat nominee pretending they never supported abolishing police, men in women’s sports, or abolishing [ICE].”
Pipko also pointed out the digital paper trail that makes the whole performance particularly brazen: “Watching Democrats in 2026 pretending they never called for defunding the police has been incredibly entertaining considering almost all of them still have old posts up clearly advocating for that very policy.”
“Considering how much damage some of these views have caused, it is extremely pompous to simply dismiss this time in our politics as ‘Woke 1.’ This shows how little democrats actually believe in the what they say or do.”
Media Research Center’s NewsBusters executive editor Tim Graham told Fox News Digital that he does not believe the Democrats are actually retreating from anything, just recalibrating their public posture while keeping the ideology intact.
“I don’t believe the Democrats want to be seen backing away from wokeness, especially now that they’re sharing a ‘big tent’ from people who want to empty the prisons,” Graham said. “They’re just less confident than they were in 2020 when they could proclaim that race riots are ‘rebellions’ and violence was an acceptable method to create the social change they wanted. It was like political Drano.”
Even a Democrat strategist sounded the alarm. Democratic consultant and former House Judiciary Committee minority chief counsel Julian Epstein offered a warning to his own party, telling Fox News Digital that the rebranding exercise does not hold up under scrutiny: “There is not much difference between Woke 1 and Woke 2, they both involve the commodification of grievance and rage, and then the packaging of lunatic ideas th[…]”
The fact that a Democrat strategist is using language like “commodification of grievance” to describe his own party’s trajectory is not a minor data point.
The Wold Warning and the Williamson Question
Former White House deputy assistant for domestic policy under Trump and former Assistant Attorney General Theo Wold went further than any of the others, suggesting Rogan himself is being too generous toward Democrats in this whole exchange.
“AOC’s sarcastic dismissal of Woke 1.0 isn’t a sign that Democrats are abandoning a leftist agenda — it’s a sign that they’re moving on to phase 2 of their project,” Wold said. “She now casually laughs at the radical ideas she actively promoted just a few years ago. And Joe Rogan, unfortunately, is too gullible to see the truth: this is who Democrats are.”
“They won’t abandon these ideas or apologize for them because they believe them, and when in power, they will ruthlessly advance them.”
That is the thing worth sitting with. The laugh on ABC was not a confession. It was a costume change.
YouTuber Chris Williamson, who appeared as a guest on the same podcast with Rogan, raised the question that cuts straight through the whole Democrat “Woke 1.0 was crazy” narrative. The premise of Democrat self-reflection, he pointed out, depends entirely on the fact that they lost.
“Think about what would have happened if Kamala had won,” Williamson said. “Would AOC have been talking about Woke 1.0 was crazy or would that have been a continuation of, ‘Well, look, we put the policies out, people like the policies.’ How much of this is a reversal of the position because it wasn’t effective?”
That is the honest question nobody in the mainstream press wants to sit with. The Democrat Party did not have a crisis of conscience after 2020. They had a crisis of results. The “Woke 1.0 was crazy” line is not a reckoning. It is polling-tested repositioning ahead of 2026 and 2028.
And the defund-the-police movement, which sent crime surging in cities across the country after 2020, is exactly the kind of radical, anti-police agenda that working Americans rejected at the ballot box. The communities that got hit hardest by reduced policing were not wealthy suburbs. They were working-class neighborhoods that could not afford private security. Democrats pushed that policy and then watched communities pay for it in blood.
Calling it “Woke 1.0” and laughing does not bring anyone back.
Rogan’s broader point is not complicated. If Democrats genuinely believe they went wrong, they should be able to say where. Which specific policies? Which specific positions? Defund the police? Biological males in women’s sports? Abolishing ICE? Sex-change procedures for minors? The question is not hard to ask. The reason they won’t answer it is because answering it would require admitting that the policies were not just politically inconvenient — they were wrong. And that admission would fracture the coalition they are trying to reassemble for the next election cycle.
So instead, they laugh. And they hope the voters who remember forget.
Rogan’s point is that voters do not forget. And strategists on both sides of the aisle are telling Democrats the same thing: the receipts are still online, the old posts are still up, and a chuckle on Sunday morning television is not going to make any of it disappear.
