Fox News host Jesse Watters said something that turned heads on The Five.
It had nothing to do with fence-sitting or second-guessing Trump.
And the reason Watters gave for rooting for a Democrat House takeover will leave political junkies talking for weeks.
What Watters Actually Said on The Five
Watters told his co-hosts recently that he genuinely wants Democrats to retake the House of Representatives — but the reason has zero to do with agreeing with them on anything.
“Because I want to see my guy Pete Hegseth in front of the House Oversight Committee, just punching them in the face,” Watters said.
He kept going.
“We need something to cover; I want to see Don[ald Trump] Jr. up there, I want to see [Stephen] Miller up there just giving it to these guys,” Watters said.
So the logic is this: Watters sees a Democrat-controlled House as a gift to conservative media — a nonstop supply of confrontational hearings that give Trump’s biggest fighters a national stage to go on offense against the very people dragging them in.
But Watters raised another question after laying out that scenario. He turned to his co-hosts and asked whether they thought Trump administration officials would invoke their Fifth Amendment right to remain silent the way Dr. Anthony Fauci did earlier this year.
“Hope not,” Watters said. “I doubt it, but they’re gonna bring it.”
That’s the contrast Watters is drawing. Fauci, under subpoena before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times according to reporting by American Thinker. Watters is betting that Hegseth, Don Jr., and Stephen Miller would go in the opposite direction — not dodge, but fight.
The Problem With Watters’ Take
Politics isn’t supposed to be an entertainment spectacle.
It’s how society decides who governs and how.
Watters making a flip comment about Democrats’ extremism being good for Fox News’ ratings struck many Trump supporters that Fox News really isn’t any different from other media outlets that promote sensationalism over truth-telling.
A Democrat majority means the end of Trump’s legislative agenda, defunding mass deportations, and endless investigations that chew up time, ruin lives and wreck the financial stability of its targets.
It’s no laughing matter for those Democrats targeted with lawfare.
What the Polling Shows and What It Could Mean
Watters may get exactly what he says he wants.
A generic ballot poll conducted by Silver Bulletin shows Democrats leading Republicans by 8.1 points. That is a substantial gap, and if it holds anywhere near that margin on Election Day, Democrats have a real path to flipping the House.
The question worth asking is what happens next if they do.
Democrats have a documented pattern of telling voters before a midterm that impeachment is off the table, then pursuing it once they land in the majority. They made those assurances before 2018. After winning the House, they impeached Trump twice — first over the Ukraine matter and then over what happened at the Capitol on January 6. Both proceedings were partisan political exercises dressed up as constitutional accountability, and neither removed Trump from anything except, temporarily, the front pages.
A fresh Democrat majority would not be starting from scratch. It would arrive with pre-built hostility toward the administration, pre-written subpoenas, and an entire media infrastructure ready to turn every hearing into a spectacle.
But spectacles require willing participants on both sides. And what Watters is suggesting is that this time around, the administration’s witnesses would not flinch, fold, or plead the Fifth. They would show up and give it back.
That is a meaningfully different scenario than Democrats may be planning for.
The left spent years framing oversight hearings as moments of gravity and accountability — the serious work of a co-equal branch keeping the executive in check. What they got from Fauci was a man refusing to answer anything. What they could get from Hegseth, Don Jr., and Miller, according to Watters’ read, is a counter-offensive in real time.
Whether that plays out depends entirely on whether Democrats actually flip the chamber. And whether the administration figures Watters named are even called — and willing to go — remains to be seen.
Republicans believe their best chance to reverse their fortunes is to run against the Democrats as a collection of out-of-control socialists more interested in settling partisan scores than addressing affordability.
