President Trump commands control of the Republican Party.
Trump’s influence was put to the test.
And Donald Trump heard seven words that will change the Republican Party forever.
The May 2026 runoff in the Texas Senate race pits Texas State Attorney General Ken Paxton against RINO incumbent Senator John Cornyn.
Cornyn and his allies spent the months after the March 3 primary pressuring President Trump to endorse Cornyn, believing that Trump’s backing would prove decisive.
But with a week to go before voters head to the polls, Cornyn threw in the towel on the idea that Trump would endorse him.
“I think that ship has finally sailed,” Cronyn told reporters.
Trump initially sounded like he was going to back Cornyn.
“I will be making an Endorsement soon, and will be asking the candidate that I don’t Endorse to immediately DROP OUT OF THE RACE!” Trump said after the initial primary.
But in recent days, Trump has made positive comments about both candidates.
“We have a great Attorney General Ken Paxton. And we have a great senator, John Cornyn,” Trump told reporters.
In an interview with The Hill, Cornyn explained he believed Trump didn’t endorse him because Paxton wouldn’t drop out of the race after polls showed Cornyn would still trail Paxton even with Trump’s backing.
“I think he was leaning toward me (in early March), and he said the person he didn’t endorse to drop out. And Paxton immediately said ‘No, he wouldn’t drop out,’ which I think caused some consternation on the part of the President,” Cornyn stated.
“I think [Trump’s] hesitation is he calls us both friends, and I think he doesn’t want to disappoint his supporters, who may be supporters of one or the other of us,” Cornyn said. “He’s the only one who will make that call,” Cornyn added.
Paxton challenged Cornyn because Cornyn wrote Joe Biden’s gun control bill.
Cornyn also said he was running for re-election so he could ram amnesty for illegal aliens through Congress.
And Cornyn is also a Trump opponent.
In 2023, Cornyn said Trump was a loser who couldn’t win a general election so he wouldn’t support his candidacy.
“I think President Trump’s time has passed him by,” Cornyn said on a conference call with members of the Texas political press corps. “And I think what’s the most important thing for me is that we have a candidate who can actually win.
“I don’t think President Trump understands that when you run in a general election, you have to appeal to voters beyond your base,” Cornyn added.
Cornyn is the kind of establishment Republican that Trump ripped control of the Republican Party away from.
And with Cornyn’s career on the line, Trump won’t be throwing him a lifeline in the form of an endorsement.
