Democrats keep losing fights.
Now one of their own is publicly calling them out for it.
And Don Lemon just made a demand that has the entire Democrat establishment squirming in their seats.
Lemon Drops the Gloves on His Own Party
Don Lemon used a recent episode of his podcast to unload on the Democrat Party for what he sees as a failure of nerve in the face of Republican political pressure.
Lemon’s core complaint was that Democrats have the legal and institutional tools to fight back against Republicans but refuse to use them.
“Democrats need to have the balls to go after Republicans with lawfare,” Lemon said, according to Mediaite’s account of the episode.
That’s a pretty remarkable thing to hear from a figure who spent years at CNN presenting himself as a neutral arbiter of political news.
But Lemon wasn’t done. He called the party’s posture “bulls***” and argued that Republicans have spent years using every legal and procedural weapon available while Democrats stand around wringing their hands about norms and decorum.
The word “lawfare” is worth pausing on for a moment.
That’s the same term conservatives have used for years to describe the coordinated legal assault on Donald Trump — the parade of indictments, civil suits, and prosecutorial actions that many Americans viewed as a political operation dressed up in legal clothing. Now a prominent left-wing media figure is openly calling for Democrats to deploy the same strategy against Republicans.
At least he’s being honest about what it is.
What Lemon Is Actually Calling For
The argument Lemon is making isn’t really about the law. It’s about power. His frustration is that Democrats have access to legal mechanisms — state attorneys general, civil litigation, regulatory action — and keep leaving them on the table while Republicans, in his view, play hardball.
And the implications are troubling.
The problem is that once both parties treat the legal system as just another political weapon, the institution itself starts to collapse. The courts stop being a place where citizens seek redress and start being a battlefield where the side with the most aggressive lawyers wins. That’s not a republic. That’s a permanent legal war of attrition funded by whoever has the deepest pockets.
Lemon apparently sees that as a feature, not a bug.
He also described the Democrat Party’s current posture as too passive — too willing to absorb hits without swinging back. Whether that’s an accurate read of the political landscape is debatable. What isn’t debatable is that Lemon is now openly advocating for the weaponization of legal processes against political opponents, which is exactly what Democrats spent years insisting Trump and his allies were doing to them.
The irony is thick enough to cut with a knife.
For years, the same media ecosystem that produced Don Lemon told the public that using legal and institutional power for political ends was a threat to democracy itself. Now that the electoral map has shifted and Democrats find themselves on defense, the message has quietly changed to: fight fire with fire.
That’s not a principled position. That’s just frustration looking for a justification.
The Bigger Pattern Worth Watching
Lemon’s outburst fits into a broader and genuinely interesting moment inside the Democrat Party right now.
There’s a real argument happening on the left about what the party is for and how hard it should fight to get there. Some voices, like Lemon’s, want the party to get more aggressive — more willing to use every tool available, legal or otherwise. Others are pushing a softer approach, arguing that the party needs to rebuild its connection to working-class voters who have been drifting toward Republicans for years.
Both camps are responding to the same problem: the Democrat Party got shellacked in 2024, and nobody in the party has a clear answer for why or what to do about it.
Calling for lawfare is one answer. But it’s worth asking whether it’s a strategy for winning back voters or just a way of making the base feel better by watching the other side get sued.
Those are very different things.
The voters who flipped from Democrat to Republican over the last several cycles weren’t doing it because Democrats weren’t aggressive enough in the courts. They were doing it because the cost of living went through the roof, because the border was wide open, because their kids were being taught things in government schools that parents never agreed to, and because the party that once claimed to speak for working people started sounding more like a faculty lounge.
More lawfare doesn’t fix any of that.
But it does give media figures something to say on their podcasts. And for a certain kind of political commentator, that’s enough.
What’s worth watching is whether Democrat elected officials actually pick up what Lemon is putting down. If state attorneys general and allied legal organizations start ramping up coordinated litigation against Republican officials and policies, that will confirm what a lot of conservatives have suspected for a while — that the legal system is being treated by one side as a permanent campaign arm.
And if that happens, the people who spent years insisting that the prosecution of Donald Trump was about justice and not politics are going to have a very hard time explaining why their version of lawfare is different from the one they condemned.
Don Lemon probably isn’t losing sleep over that contradiction. But the rest of the country might want to pay attention to where this road leads.
