Don Lemon spent years hammering President Trump on national television, night after night, without much subtlety about it.
Now the former CNN anchor wants his audience to believe none of that history actually happened the way everyone remembers it.
And what Lemon claimed about himself on his own show left even some of his own loyal viewers doing a double take.
The Sidewalk Question That Set Lemon Off
Lemon runs a YouTube show these days called The Don Lemon Show, and on a recent episode he played back footage from a street interview he had conducted with a man about President Trump’s second term.
The man in the clip told Lemon, “Look, we need uh four more years to get this country in shape,” before adding, “Give him a second chance.”
The man also made a point of noting that he already knew where Lemon stood politically going into the conversation.
That observation seemed to needle Lemon enough that he stopped the tape and delivered an extended defense of himself to his own audience.
Lemon said, “I’m not against Donald Trump. I’m not against a person in general. I’m against lies. I don’t like his policies. I don’t like the way he treats people.”
He did not stop there.
Lemon went further, insisting, “You think that I’m against him just because I’m liberal or you think that I’m liberal, because I’m not. I’m an independent.”
He also argued that “if you think that I’m against someone because of that then that that you’re discounting all kinds of reasoning that go along with why I may not like his policies or agree with his policies.”
That is a lot of words to say “I’m not what I obviously am.”
An ‘Independent’ With a Very One-Sided Record
Lemon’s on-air record tells a different story than the one he told his YouTube audience.
During his CNN years, Lemon defended calling President Trump a “bigot” and a “racist,” saying he was only speaking the truth and it doesn’t make the anchor biased.
He also once laughed along on air while a panelist mocked Trump voters as part of a conversation about “the credulous boomer rube demo that backs Donald Trump.”
Industry observers at the time noted that Lemon was widely considered one of the personalities that pushed CNN to the left in the Trump era, shredding its reputation as a just-the-facts news organization in the process.
None of that reads like the record of a true political independent with no strong feelings either way.
Lemon’s activism has not stayed confined to a television studio, either.
The journalist was arrested by federal agents in January during an anti-ICE protest at a church in Minnesota.
Standing between federal immigration officers and their work is not the move of a detached independent watching from the sidelines.
It is the move of an activist, and Lemon’s own actions undercut the careful framing he offered on his show.
What This Rebrand Really Tells Voters
President Trump earned a decisive mandate in 2024 for stronger immigration enforcement, and mass deportations of illegal aliens remain one of the clearest promises he made to the voters who sent him back to Washington, DC.
Lemon chose to physically insert himself into an anti-ICE demonstration rather than simply criticize the policy from a studio chair, which says something about how personally invested he really is.
Calling that kind of activism “independent” stretches the definition past the breaking point.
This is not the first time a media figure with a long anti-Trump paper trail has tried to soften that image once ratings, relevance, or public perception started to slip.
Lemon lost his marquee primetime slot at CNN, and his current YouTube venture depends on building an audience broader than the shrinking group of viewers who already agree with him on everything.
Telling that audience he is a truth-seeking independent rather than an activist is a far easier sell than admitting he spent years using his platform to campaign against a sitting president and then showed up at a protest against that president’s signature enforcement agency.
Voters do not need to take Lemon’s word for where he stands.
His own quotes, his own laughter at Trump supporters, and his own arrest record already answered the question he spent an entire segment trying to talk his way around.
The American public watched enough of these reinvention attempts during the Biden years from other media figures to recognize the pattern when it shows up again.
A person does not typically get arrested at an anti-ICE demonstration by accident, and no amount of studio time spent insisting otherwise changes what actually happened on the ground in Minnesota.
