Chuck Schumer was salivating over the idea of becoming the next Senate Majority Leader.
But Schumer got some bad news.
And Chuck Schumer turned sick when this sex scandal derailed his big plot.
Sexting Scandal Upends Maine Senate Race
Democrats need to flip four GOP-held seats to win control of the U.S. Senate.
That puts Chuck Schumer in a position to block all Trump agenda items and nominees.
No path exists for that to happen without Democrat challenger Graham Platner beating Republican incumbent Susan Collins in Maine.
Polls showed Platner leading Collins.
But a massive scandal tossed the race into chaos.
Both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal reported that in 2025, Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, flagged sexually explicit messages on Platner’s phone that he sent to at least six women through the social media app Kik.
“Genevieve McDonald, a former state legislator who was the Platner campaign’s political director before leaving in October, said Ms. Gertner reached out just days before a big Labor Day rally with Senator Bernie Sanders, independent of Vermont, and was concerned her husband’s behavior could become a political liability,” the Times reported.
“The current official said that the messages surfaced when Ms. McDonald asked Ms. Gertner if there was anything she wanted to share amid an internal vetting process. Ms. Gertner told the campaign that the couple had dealt with the issue in counseling, according to the official,” the Times report went on to say.
McDonald revealed that she leaked the messages to the press because she believed Platner was a moral reprobate who didn’t deserve election to the Senate.
“The United States Senate is not a training ground for redemption,” McDonald stated. “It is a place for proven leaders with moral clarity and integrity.”
History Repeats Itself
The Platner campaign flew into damage control mode with his wife claiming she and her husband went through therapy to deal with Platner straying.
“Being married is hard; being newly married is hard; being newly married and going through infertility is hard,” Gertner said in a video posted to social media. “Being newly married, going through infertility, and a Senate campaign is hard. I don’t even know if I have the right words to describe what we’ve been going through.”
“We went to counseling,” Gertner continued. “We were honest with each other in ways that weren’t easy. And we came through it, not in spite of how much we’ve been through, but because of how much we love each other and the life we’ve built.”
“I admire the **** out of him. So when there are news articles about our marriage, it’s just extra ****,” Gertner added. “Can I say that online? I hope I can,” Gertner concluded.
Maine law allows Democrats to replace Platner if he drops out of the race by the second Monday in July and his replacement is named by July 4th.
All eyes are now on Democrats to see if the party will pull off a switcheroo as they did with Kamala Harris replacing Joe Biden after Biden’s senile debate performance.
