Bill Maher rarely gets caught off guard on his own show.
But one guest’s straight-faced claim left him reeling.
And what Jessica Tarlov said next about the Democrat Party nearly knocked him out of his chair.
Tarlov Tells Maher Democrats Are “Less Crazy”
Fox News host Jessica Tarlov, who often spars with her Fox colleagues on The Five, appeared as one of Bill Maher’s guests on a recent episode of Real Time and made her “less crazy” declaration during talk about the midterms and President Donald Trump’s standing with voters. Conservative activist Christopher Rufo rounded out the panel. Maher set up the exchange by noting that recent elections have centered on Democrats looking crazy on social issues, with voters souring on that even as Trump’s economic advantage has evaporated. Tarlov jumped in with “And we’re less crazy” just as Maher appeared ready to cite a poll on Trump’s sinking approval numbers.
Maher did not let that pass quietly.
He replied with an incredulous “What?! Have you seen the Democratic—” clearly assuming Tarlov was joking. Once he realized she was being sincere, Maher asked point-blank, “You think we’re less crazy?”
Tarlov didn’t back down. She responded, “Maybe not inside, but we’re at least when we go out and give a speech talking about the economy and corruption…” before Rufo cut in.
Rufo And Maher Pile On The DSA Comparison
“They’re wearing Carhartts and pretending to be less crazy. That’s what’s happening,” Rufo said. The Fetterman-flavored dig landed with the audience, and it set up Maher for the knockout line.
“They’re communists who think the Islamists are the good guys. Are you kidding? Less crazy?” Maher asked Tarlov. “The candidates?!” Tarlov asked, appearing just as shocked as Maher.
Maher pressed further, asking, “Some of the candidates, are you not following the Democratic Socialists of America?” Tarlov didn’t deny it, admitting, “Oh no, I’m following them. I have to see them every day. I work at Fox News,” she said.
That admission is worth sitting with for a second. A sitting Fox News contributor just told Bill Maher, of all people, that she watches the Democratic Socialists of America closely enough to know exactly how radical they’ve gotten, and still tried to argue her party is the reasonable one.
Tarlov noted her job at Fox News means she’s aware on a daily basis about Democratic socialist candidates, but Maher wasn’t buying the framing. “They’re not less crazy. And they’re not recanting any of that crazy gender stuff. I mean, they’re doubling down,” Maher said.
What Maher’s Reaction Actually Reveals
This isn’t the first time Maher has broken from Democrat Party talking points on air. He has spent recent episodes of Real Time openly wrestling with how far his own party has drifted, and his reaction to Tarlov wasn’t performative shock for ratings. It read as genuine disbelief that a Democrat operative would look at the current landscape and call her side the sane one. The Democratic Socialists of America is not a fringe internet meme. It is an openly Marxist organization whose platform calls for the abolition of the Senate, the replacement of the presidency and Supreme Court with bodies subordinate to Congress, government seizure of major corporations, and open borders. When members of that movement win Democrat primaries, party leadership has increasingly chosen accommodation over confrontation. Rufo’s Carhartt line wasn’t just a jab at John Fetterman’s wardrobe. It was a shorthand for a broader pattern of Democrats rebranding the same positions in more palatable packaging rather than actually moderating.
Tarlov’s own answer undercut her argument in real time. She didn’t dispute that the DSA candidates hold radical positions. She said the quiet part out loud, that she watches them daily because of her job, and then pivoted straight to a talking point about economic messaging as if the substance of the party’s leftward lurch was somehow beside the point.
That’s the trick establishment-friendly Democrats keep trying to pull. Claim the center while refusing to actually distance the party from its most radical wing. Maher, to his credit, wasn’t having it. He didn’t let Tarlov get away with the “less crazy” framing just because she said it with confidence.
Trump’s approval numbers have taken hits amid the fallout from the Iran conflict, and Democrats are clearly hoping the midterms turn into a referendum on the president rather than on their own platform. But a party that includes candidates unwilling to recant “crazy gender stuff,” in Maher’s own words, and that counts self-described communists among its rising stars, doesn’t get to claim sanity by comparison just because its members occasionally give speeches about the economy.
Voters will get the final say on which party is actually the more stable choice. But even a longtime liberal comedian on HBO couldn’t keep a straight face when a Fox News Democrat tried to sell him on the idea that her side has cornered the market on reasonableness.
