The fall home stretch of the midterm election campaign is right around the corner.
Both parties are jockeying for an upper hand.
And A Fox News host just asked one 2026 question that hit Trump like a freight train.
Fox Host Presses Republican Senator on Iran War
Recently, CNN polling analyst Harry Enten walked through numbers showing that Trump’s support on Iran plunged 24 points, down to 29%, among highly motivated voters.
“Back in July of 2024, 53% of voters who said they were extremely motivated to vote said they were actually confident that Trump would be able to handle the situation in Iran. Look at where that number is now when it comes to his approval among the same group: just 29% of those who are extremely motivated to vote in these midterm elections approve of the job President Trump is doing on Iran,” Enten stated.
Fox News host David Asman asked Indiana Republican Senator Jim Banks about polls showing the Iran War is an increasing liability for the GOP and if President Trump could bring the conflict to a close, which would lower gas prices heading into the midterm election.
“We do, of course, have a midterm election coming up,” Asman stated. “And the question is whether all this can happen before the midterms, whether voters will see some signs that we’ve turned a corner in ending this conflict. Even the Iranians, by the way, are now referring to the midterm elections. They know that the president and Republicans are particularly sensitive about how all this could affect the midterms.”
Banks began by telling Aslam that he respected President Trump for taking a course of action he thought was right even if it wasn’t going to benefit him politically.
“Well, I give President Trump so much credit because he doesn’t look at this as an election issue… Some things are more important than elections, so —” Banks began before Asman cut him off.
The Iran War’s Impact on the Elections
Fox News spent months airing nonstop coverage making the case for Trump to go to war with Iran.
Now that the average cost of gas is $4.11 per gallon nationwide, and polls show the Iran war hurting Republicans, Fox is peppering GOP officials with questions about why Trump isn’t wrapping up the war quickly enough.
“I got it. I got it. But again, the election is coming, and there are a lot of Republicans who are concerned about being reelected or going against a competitor. How do you think the war is gonna play into the elections?” Asman wondered.
Every poll shows that the economy and affordability are top issues for voters, a reality Banks acknowledged, but he repeated that it was important for Trump to pursue an end to the war so gas prices could come down and Americans could see their quality of life improving.
“Well, I think we’ve gotta bring gas prices back down,” Banks replied. “We’ve gotta get the economy moving, and the housing market moving, and the quality of life for all Americans to continue to improve.”
