President Trump is carrying more weight than any American leader has shouldered in decades.
Back home, even some of his own allies on cable news started sniping at him.
And Fox News contributor Lisa Boothe said something on air that a lot of people in Washington probably wish she hadn’t.
What Boothe Said on Outnumbered
During a segment on *Outnumbered*, Boothe explained why she felt Trump had grown frustrated with the war.
“Well, obviously very concerning for him to twice today talk about Iran potentially taking him out,” Boothe said. “Look, he sounds frustrated to me. He sounds tired, as well. He’s got the weight of the world on his shoulders with wars in Ukraine, as well as Iran.”
That is a striking thing to say on a network that has largely backed the administration’s foreign policy moves. Boothe did not dress it up or walk it back.
Boothe went on to detail the US and Israel’s extensive efforts to destabilize the Iranian regime, which began with heavy strikes in February as part of Operation Epic Fury. Still, Boothe said, “the regime’s not breaking.”
“So what does exiting look like, particularly with what’s going on in the Strait of Hormuz and the disruption that the Iranians have been able to move forward with there?” Boothe continued. “So, I don’t know what exit looks like. I don’t know what winning looks like at this point. It’s frustrating, so I guess we’ll wait to see, but it looks like we’re in a quagmire right now.”
Those words carry real weight. “Quagmire” is not a word that gets thrown around lightly, and Boothe knows exactly what she was saying.
How the Conflict Reached This Point
Operation Epic Fury was the US code name for its joint military operations with Israel against Iran that began on February 28, 2026, and concluded on May 5. The opening salvo took out the heart of the Iranian regime, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and triggered a torrent of hundreds of retaliatory missiles and thousands of drones from Iran across the Middle East.
In early 2026, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lobbied President Donald Trump for a joint military strike on Iran, specifically targeting its leadership. Following high-level meetings in February, Trump authorized Operation Epic Fury, with reports citing Israeli intelligence provided by Netanyahu as a decisive factor in the decision.
The stated goal was to prevent Iran from ever acquiring nuclear weapons and to destroy its missile infrastructure. Those were legitimate objectives. But military operations rarely end where they were planned to end.
Despite the memorandum of understanding reached in June 2026 that sought to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the Iran war, Iran has sought to assert hegemonic control over the strait and eventually collect fees on ships passing through. The country has repeatedly warned ships to use pre-approved routes and follow protocols set by the regime. It has followed up on its threats by firing at multiple ships, including three commercial vessels on July 6-7. Iran’s activity in the strait tests the limits of the memorandum of understanding and has prompted attacks by the United States in response.
Hours before Boothe’s comments aired, Trump declared the Memorandum of Understanding with Iran was “over” due to the country firing on ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
US forces launched a new wave of attacks on Iran in retaliation.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard said it responded to those strikes by launching missiles and drones against Kuwait and Bahrain, two Arab Gulf countries that host US military bases.
And so the cycle continues. Strike, retaliate, repeat. That is what Boothe was describing when she said she does not know what winning looks like.
A hardline Iranian lawmaker reportedly suggested that President Trump’s location during the NATO summit in Turkey should be hit with a missile. Hamid Rasaee made the comments in a post on Virasty, an Iranian social media platform, pointing to Trump’s presence in Turkey as an opportunity to strike the site where he is staying, according to Iran International.
That is the environment Trump is operating in right now. Threats to his personal safety while managing a war, a NATO summit, and a fractured alliance all at the same time.
Why This Matters for Trump’s America First Promise
Trump ran in 2024 on a clear promise: end the endless wars, bring American troops home, and stop spending American blood and treasure on conflicts that do not serve American interests. That mandate was real and the voters who gave it to him meant it.
The Iran situation is genuinely complicated, and it is worth being clear about that. Iran’s regime spent decades building a nuclear program, funding proxy militias across the region, and threatening American allies. The administration’s stated objective of preventing a nuclear-armed Iran is a legitimate national security interest, not a neoconservative fantasy.
But there is a real tension between that objective and the America First mandate. The voters who sent Trump back to Washington did not sign up for an open-ended military commitment in the Middle East. They signed up for results and an exit.
“I was very disappointed with NATO,” Trump told journalists as he met Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after arriving in Ankara for the NATO summit. “We didn’t need any help at all, and in a way, I was testing people, I was testing to see whether or not they’d be there, because I’ve long said that we helped them, but I’m not sure that they’d be there for us.”
Trump’s frustration with NATO allies is understandable. Several allies later agreed to support maritime security operations aimed at restoring commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, but administration officials say the initial reluctance to back the US campaign continues to shape Trump’s view heading into the summit.
But frustration with allies does not resolve the underlying strategic question Boothe raised. What does the endgame look like? What does success actually mean in practical terms?
The President convened top officials in Ankara, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen Dan Caine. These are serious people working a serious problem. But the situation on the ground keeps shifting faster than any diplomatic framework can catch up.
The neoconservative playbook that delivered Iraq and Libya never had an exit strategy either. That is precisely what made those wars so catastrophic and so expensive in American lives and American dollars. The voters who elected Trump know that history. They lived through it. They do not want to repeat it.
Boothe is not a dove. She is not calling for capitulation. But she is asking the same question that millions of Americans are quietly asking right now: at what point does a legitimate military objective become a commitment with no clear end?
That is not a comfortable question. But it is the right one. And the fact that it is being raised on Fox News, by a contributor who supports this President, tells you something about where the conversation stands.
Trump has the toughest job in the world right now. He deserves credit for confronting the Iran nuclear threat directly rather than kicking the can down the road the way every previous administration did. But the American people also deserve a clear answer about what comes next, and when the men and women in uniform get to come home.
