Kimmel escaped firing last fall after falsely claiming on the air that Charlie Kirk’s assassin was a MAGA supporter.
Now, Kimmel is facing calls for his firing after joking on his show that Melania Trump was waiting for Trump to die.
“Our First Lady Melania is here,” Kimmel said on a show that aired 48 hours before a suspected assassin allegedly tried to kill Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner. “Look at her, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you glow like an expectant widow.”
Melania Trump led the charge, calling for ABC to take Kimmel off the air, posting on social media that Kimmel’s hatred of Donald Trump is creating the climate where deranged leftists keep trying to publicly execute her husband.
“A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him. Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand. How many times will ABC’s leadership enable Kimmel’s atrocious behavior at the expense of our community?” Melania Trump wrote on X.
Kimmel responded to Melania Trump, defending his joke about her hoping her husband dies, and claimed his calls for the government to ban and confiscate firearms absolved him from any responsibility for inciting violence against Trump.
“It was a pretend roast. I said our first lady, Melania, is here. Look at her, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you glow like an expectant widow, which obviously was a joke about their age difference and the look of joy we see on her face every time they’re together. It was a very light roast joke about the fact that he’s almost 80 and she’s younger than I am. It was not by any stretch of the definition a call to assassination. And they know that. I’ve been very vocal for many years, speaking out against gun violence, in particular,” Kimmel stated.
Instead, Kimmel blamed Donald Trump for a toxic political environment and for inspiring leftists to kill him.
“But I understand that the first lady had a stressful experience over the weekend, and probably every weekend is pretty stressful in that house. And also, I agree that hateful and violent rhetoric is something we should reject. I do. And I think a great place to start to dial that back would be to have a conversation with your husband about it, because, by the way, I also should point out Donald Trump is allowed to say whatever he wants to say, as you are you, as am I, as are all of us, because under the First Amendment we have a right, as Americans, to free speech,” Kimmel added.
