Real Time host Bill Maher continues to pick fights with his own party.
This time, Maher took on one of the biggest names on the left.
And Bill Maher just destroyed Bernie Sanders with one question he couldn’t answer.
An article of faith among Democrats in every debate over taxes is the claim that the rich supposedly don’t pay their fair share.
Bill Maher used a recent monologue to debunk that falsehood, telling his audience that when he added up all the taxes he paid, he forked over 60% of his income to the state, local, and federal government.
Maher said if the rich are paying the supermajority of their income to the government, then socialists like Bernie Sanders should stop whining that the rich aren’t paying their fair share.
“Last week was tax day… I paid to the government, if you add in state tax, local, sales, property, fees, and Obamacare, probably almost 60% of what I earn. That’s a lot, and I still wouldn’t mind if Bernie Sanders would stop saying the rich don’t pay taxes,” Maher stated.
Maher said no matter how many loopholes and deductions there are, the rich still pay the vast majority of taxes in America.
“And while I’m sure the super-rich, with their army of accountants and corporate loopholes, get away with murder, we regular rich people pay a s— ton of taxes!” Maher added.
The latest available data show that the top 1% of income earners in America pay 38.4% of all income taxes.
Maher also went on to point out to Sanders that he whines about America not adopting socialism, where socialist welfare programs and entitlements like Medicare and Social Security are the drivers of the federal debt.
“The democratic socialists talk about socialism like we don’t already have a lot,” Maher added.
Maher also demanded that Sanders answer why, after 80 years of a socialist welfare state, the poor in America are worse off despite all the government checks.
“Not against it, just the same question — how can you be soaking the rich and failing the poor so badly?” Maher stated.
Maher quipped that’s a question Democrats don’t want to answer.
“Are we really this incompetent and corrupt? Don’t answer that…” Maher then joked.
Mahen then broke down the facts of life ot the left by noting that tax increases kill wealth by explaining that California’s proposed ballot measures to propose a 5% wealth tax on billionaires caused wealthy Californians to flee the state and cause a drop in tax revenue.
“You raise billionaires’ taxes, they just leave the state, or they leave the country… or, in some cases, the planet,” Majer snarked.
Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel, car loan magnate Don Hankey, former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, and venture capitalist David Sacks all announced they departed California over the wealth tax.
Maher spoke a biting truth that liberals don’t want to hear – rich Americans already pay their fair share, and further tax increases threaten to kill the golden goose.
