Texas Senator Ted Cruz keeps picking fights with President Trump.
That’s because Cruz intends to run for President in 2028 as the anti-Trump candidate.
And now Ted Cruz wants to hand Democrats one unspeakable weapon to target Trump.
Cruz’s Latest Anti-Trump Turn
Ever since Trump’s second term began, Cruz has hunted for areas to break with Trump to carve out space for a 2028 Presidential campaign, where he plans to curry favor with anti-Trump donors who want to revive the pre-Trump Republican Party.
Cruz opposed Trump’s tariffs, his peace negotiations to end the Iran War, and the proposed $5,000 post-election dividend.
Now Cruz is teaming with Trump-hating Oregon Democrat Senator Ron Wyden on the so-called “JAWBONE” Act, which will protect liberal media outlets and hosts.
The impetus for Cruz’s bill was his opposition last year to Trump and Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brenden Carr advocating for ABC to yank Jimmy Kimmel off the air after Kimmel went on TV and falsely claimed Charlie Kirk’s assassin was a MAGA supporter.
“But what he [Carr] said there is dangerous as hell,” Cruz said on his podcast. “And so he threatens, explicitly, we’re going to cancel ABC’s license.”
“We’re going to take them off the air so ABC cannot broadcast anymore. He says we can do this the easy way, or we could do this the hard way, yeah. And I got to say that’s right out of Goodfellas,” Cruz added.
“That’s right out of a mafioso,” Cruz concluded.
Cruz Allies With Jimmy Kimmel
Cruz allied himself with liberals Wyden and Kimmel against Trump, whom Cruz attacked as a censorious tyrant.
“Nearly all of Americans’ speech — including TV news, online streams, and social media — flows through private corporations that are highly susceptible to government pressure. Regular Americans can’t count on those companies to stand up to government jawboning, they need a way to level the playing field.
The most blatant example is Trump threatening cable companies because he doesn’t like their late-night shows, but jawboning isn’t partisan, and it isn’t new. The JAWBONE Act would provide Americans with the ability to sue when the government illegally coerces censorship and create transparency around government requests to censor speech those companies to stand up to government jawboning, they need a way to level the playing field,” a statement from Cruz and Wyden read.
But Cruz’s bill would empower Democrat Attorneys General, like New York’s Letitia James, to bankrupt Republicans who push back on Democrats twisting public airwaves into left-wing propaganda machines by filing suit in Democrat controlled jurisdictions in what will amount to rigged cases.
“Simply put, the Cruz bill would empower the radical left, which already has institutional advantages in Hollywood and in the establishment media.
It would authorize Democrat AGs like James and the radical left in the trial bar to bring financially ruinous lawsuits against Republicans any time they push back against news media, including against false stories that libel or defame those Republican officials,” Breitbart’s Bradley Jaye wrote.
Cruz’s bill isn’t about protecting free speech.
It’s another plank in his planned 2028 anti-Trump Presidential campaign.
