Democrats are already plotting their revenge against Elon Musk.
They’re keeping the plan quiet, but a well-connected New York Times reporter just blew the lid off the whole scheme.
And what this liberal reporter revealed about Democrats’ plot against Musk will leave you red with rage.
What Haberman Said on Bloomberg
New York Times journalist Maggie Haberman appeared on Bloomberg’s The Mishal Husain Show recently and dropped a very telling admission about what Democrat politicians have been whispering to her in private.
When asked whether Democrats would subpoena Elon Musk and dig into his months of work with DOGE, the Department of Government Efficiency, Haberman didn’t hedge.
“100%,” she said. “I mean, people have privately told me that that’s what they plan to do. Again, what they say they plan to do and what they will do can sometimes be different, but I do think that they will.”
That’s not speculation. That’s Democrat elected officials telling one of the most plugged-in political reporters in the country exactly what they intend to do the moment they get the gavel back.
Haberman also took a shot at DOGE itself during the same appearance, calling Musk’s role in the Trump administration a “de facto co-presidency” and dismissing the entire government efficiency effort with the declaration that “DOGE just was a failure. It didn’t work.”
Easy to say now that DOGE has wound down. Harder to square with the fact that Democrats are apparently so frightened of what DOGE uncovered, or what a serious congressional investigation of federal spending might uncover, that they’re already building a subpoena strategy around it.
Haberman also told the show’s audience that she sees a scenario where Democrats win the House. She pegged retaking the Senate as “a high bar” but said she could envision Democrats picking up enough Senate seats to complicate things for Republicans on that front as well.
The Real Motive Behind the Subpoena Talk
Let’s be honest about what this is. Democrats don’t actually believe Elon Musk did anything illegal. They believe he helped expose the size and waste of the administrative state they built over decades, and they want to punish him for it.
DOGE went into the federal bureaucracy and started asking questions that nobody in Washington wanted answered. Where did the money go? Who authorized these contracts? Why does this agency exist at this scale? The political class in both parties has spent years insulating those spending decisions from any real scrutiny. Musk and his team threatened that arrangement.
So now, the moment Democrats smell a midterm majority, the first item on the agenda isn’t healthcare, isn’t foreign policy, isn’t the southern border. It’s a subpoena for the man who tried to cut their budget.
This is a pattern the left runs every single time. Win a majority, weaponize the committee system, drag political opponents in front of cameras, and call it oversight. They did it with January 6, turning a select committee into a made-for-television prosecution. They did it with impeachment, twice. And now their members are privately promising Maggie Haberman they’ll do it again with Musk and DOGE.
Haberman even acknowledged the parallel herself during the interview, noting that the same dynamic that shaped the January 6 committee will shape whatever Democrats cook up against Musk. The point of the exercise isn’t accountability. The point is the spectacle.
The Haberman Factor and What It Tells You About the Establishment
It’s worth pausing on the source here. Maggie Haberman is not a disinterested observer. She co-authored a book called Regime Change, a behind-the-scenes account of the early months of Trump’s second administration, and she has drawn sustained criticism from President Trump over her reporting.
And yet even Haberman, who called DOGE a failure and described Musk’s role in the administration as a “de facto co-presidency,” is essentially confirming that Democrats view Musk as the prime target for a future political theater production. She’s not warning against it. She’s reporting it with the matter-of-fact tone of someone who finds it entirely reasonable.
That tells you something about where the establishment media and the Democrat Party sit on this. They spent months complaining that Musk had too much power. Now their plan, the moment voters hand them a majority, is to give him even more visibility by hauling him before Congress under subpoena so cameras can capture the confrontation.
Because Democrats cannot simply run on what they’ve accomplished or on a policy agenda that excites voters. That’s not a new problem. Haberman herself noted in the same interview that Democrats lack a great message against Trump. But they do understand that creating political enemies and then going after those enemies generates energy, donors, and media coverage.
Musk is the perfect target for that project. He’s famous, he’s controversial, he’s associated with government spending cuts that the left hates on ideological grounds, and he’s a living rebuke to the idea that the administrative state is untouchable.
But subpoenaing Musk wouldn’t retrieve one dollar of savings he found. It wouldn’t reopen one agency DOGE examined. It wouldn’t reverse one spending cut that trimmed the federal bureaucracy. It would produce hearings, talking points, and fundraising emails. That’s the whole point.
Haberman noted that what Democrats say they plan to do and what they actually do can diverge. Fair enough. But the fact that multiple Democrat members of Congress are making these commitments privately to a major media figure tells you the appetite is real and the planning has begun.
The 2026 midterms are a few weeks out. And if voters hand Democrats control of the House, the first order of business, according to Democrat members of Congress themselves, won’t be cutting spending, protecting the border, or addressing the chronic disease crisis. It’ll be a full-on political assault on the man who tried to find out where the money went.
That’s what Democrat governance looks like. And now they’ve said so out loud, to Maggie Haberman, on the record.
