A top Senate Democrat just told Americans their fears about illegal alien crime are all in their heads.
The families of victims know exactly what that kind of dismissal costs.
And Connecticut Democrat Sen. Chris Murphy called migrant crime a “fake problem” — and what happened in his own state the very same day exposes just how wrong he is.
What Murphy Actually Said — and Who It Insults
Murphy made the remarks at a Connecticut event hosted by the CT Mirror on August 26, before a friendly home-state audience that wasn’t going to push back hard.
His exact words: “Nobody likes to hear this, but immigrants — first-generation immigrants — and undocumented immigrants both commit crimes at rates lower than natural-born Americans, than people that are born here in this country.”
He kept going. “So, if you want to live in a safe community, you are actually better off living in a community with people that just got to the United States of America.”
Read that again. A sitting US Senator from Connecticut told American voters that their neighborhoods get safer when filled with people who just arrived illegally.
Murphy was responding to a question about what the real immigration problem is. His answer: the Trump administration has it backwards. The problem, Murphy said, isn’t crime from illegal aliens — it’s an immigration system that operates “without rules.” The idea that Americans face physical danger from illegal aliens is, in his words, “a fake problem.”
Tell that to the families who have buried their children.
The Numbers Murphy Doesn’t Want to Talk About
Pro-migration groups have been circulating a report claiming that neighborhoods with more illegal aliens see “no detectable change in [rates of] violent crime.” The lead author of that study did not respond to questions from Breitbart News in mid-August.
The Cato Institute — not exactly a right-wing enforcement shop — runs a similar rate-based argument. But Cato’s own March 2026 estimate undercuts the talking point Murphy is leaning on.
According to that Cato data, Hispanic illegal migrants have a crime rate of 957 per 100,000. White Americans clock in at 720 per 100,000. Asians at 312.
So on Cato’s own numbers, Hispanic illegal migrants commit crimes at a rate significantly higher than white Americans and nearly three times higher than Asian Americans. Other reports put migrant crime rates even higher than what Cato found.
Cato can still claim the overall illegal migrant population offends at a lower average rate than Americans collectively — but only because certain domestic groups have very high reported figures that pull the average up. That’s the statistical shell game Murphy is running. Average down the number by picking your comparison group carefully, then declare the whole concern a “fake problem.”
Mark Krikorian, director of the Center for Immigration Studies, put it plainly. Migration, he acknowledged, “can in fact lower the crime rate, but it doesn’t help anybody who got killed by illegal aliens.”
That’s the part Murphy skips entirely. The rate argument is cold comfort to a family sitting at a funeral.
Krikorian also noted something worth sitting with: “You know Chris Murphy doesn’t have to worry about his daughter being killed by an illegal alien like Laken Riley was killed [in 2024].”
Elite Democrats live in communities insulated from the consequences of their own immigration politics. Murphy can afford to call it a “fake problem.” The working-class families in his own state cannot.
What DHS Was Doing in Connecticut While Murphy Was Talking
The timing here is almost too perfect to believe — except it happened.
On August 26 — the exact same day Murphy was telling a Connecticut audience that migrant crime isn’t real — the Department of Homeland Security announced it had deported another group of criminal illegal aliens, including one from Murphy’s own state.
His name: German Oliverio Miranda-Tapia. A Mexican national. A member of the Paisas gang.
His criminal history in Connecticut includes convictions for third-degree sexual assault involving a relative under 16 years old, risk of injury to a child, assault, and reckless driving.
Miranda-Tapia was deported by the Trump administration on July 14, 2020. He then illegally re-entered the United States — a felony — at an unknown date and location. And he was back in Connecticut, racking up more of the kind of criminal record that Murphy insists doesn’t exist.
That’s not a statistic. That’s a person who should have been gone for good, who came back, and who was preying on people in the state whose senator was simultaneously telling voters the threat is imaginary.
Democrats ignore the death toll from illegal alien crime because the open-borders worldview treats immigration as an unqualified moral good. Any data point that complicates that picture gets averaged away, explained away, or dismissed as a “fake problem.” The victims get nothing — not acknowledgment, not justice, not even the basic dignity of having their suffering treated as real.
And that’s the pattern. Murphy opposed the Laken Riley Act. He has focused his public energy on attacking ICE enforcement actions rather than grieving the Americans those enforcement actions are designed to protect. His framing of the Danbury, Connecticut ICE arrests — which DHS called “fiction” aimed at political points — fits the same mold.
Murphy wants to talk about rates. He doesn’t want to talk about German Oliverio Miranda-Tapia. He doesn’t want to talk about Laken Riley. He doesn’t want to talk about any of the specific Americans whose lives were ended or shattered by people who had no legal right to be in this country.
Because the moment you talk about those specific people, the “fake problem” framing collapses entirely.
The Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda exists precisely because voters rejected the Murphy approach in 2024. Americans looked at years of open-borders policy and the crime that followed and decided they were done being told the problem wasn’t real.
Murphy can keep running the rate argument in front of sympathetic Connecticut audiences. But the families of the people killed by illegal aliens who should have been removed — or who were removed and came back anyway — aren’t buying it.
And neither should anyone else.
