Mark Halperin Says Talarico ‘On Track’ to Defeat Paxton
Flipping Texas blue is the white whale of Democrat Party politics, as the Democrats haven’t won a Senate race in the Lone Star State since 1988.
Democrats thought this year was the year after nominating James Talarico, a so-called “preacher” and a white male.
Republicans figured Talarico claiming the Bible was pro-abortion, claiming God was non-binary, and declaring “love” for transgender children meant Talarico was the typical Democrat who was too far to the left of Texas voters to win.
But the last four polls in Texas show Talarico leading Republican Ken Paxton, and the Real Clear Politics polling average has Talarico up 1.6%.
Journalist Mark Halperin joined Megyn Kelly on her podcast and said right now, Talarico was the favorite.
“I’m second to no political analyst for the last 20 years in laughing at Democrats wasting money trying to win races in Texas. I have been consistent in looking at the demographics and saying, maybe someday, but not now. Because of the climate, because of how unpopular President Trump is, and because of Ken Paxton’s unpopularity, if the election were held today, I believe Talarico would win,” Halperin stated.
Republicans Can Still Win
Halperin argued Republicans could still turn the race around and win, but that the current trajectory pointed to a Talarico win.
“They will say, do you want common sense or do you want a communist? Do you want common sense, or do want kooky? And if they can do that and turn things around, they’ll win, but they must execute. In other words, on the current trajectory, as long as it’s been since the Democrat has won a statewide race in Texas, as much as Talarico has said many things that would in a normal cycle disqualify him for Texas voters, he will win unless the Republicans can change the current trajectory of the race. And that’s true in a lot of other races right now too,” Halperin added.
Kelly couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“That’s stunning,” Kelly replied.
“It is,” Halperin stated.
Halperin noted he ignored the hype that comes around every two years about Democrats winning Texas, so when he said Democrats were the favorites to win this Senate race, it was a prediction he didn’t make lightly.
“You can go check my record,” Halperin added. “I have — there’s not been a single cycle, presidential or midterm, where I have given Democrats a chance to win a statewide race in Texas. Not a chance, wasn’t even open to it. But it’s happening now unless the Republicans fix it.”
Establishment GOP Sabotages Paxton
Talarico is leading Paxton because establishment Republicans are throwing the race to exact revenge on President Trump for endorsing Paxton over RINO incumbent John Cornyn.
Cornyn said he was running for another term to pass an amnesty bill, wrote Joe Biden’s 2022 gun control bill, and didn’t support Trump in 2024 by falsely claiming that Trump was unelectable.
After Cornyn lost the primary, he refused to raise money for Paxton.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee refuse to spend one penny on the race.
Establishment Republicans would rather a Democrat win than a pro-Trump conservative because they want to exile Trump and the MAGA movement from the GOP in 2028, and they think Democrats winning in Texas is a talking point they can latch on to in an attempt to gaslight GOP voters into moving on from the America First agenda and President Trump’s grip on the GOP.
