Jen Psaki spent years as Joe Biden’s mouthpiece at the White House podium, telling America everything was fine.
Now she runs a show on MSNBC and apparently can’t figure out why nobody’s paying attention to the party she still carries water for.
And what she just admitted on air is the kind of thing that should have every Democrat strategist reaching for antacids.
Psaki’s Accidental Confession on Her Own Show
Psaki sat down recently with former ABC News journalist Terry Moran on her MSNBC program The Briefing to chew over why Democrats aren’t pulling ahead in the polls heading into the November midterm elections, even with President Donald Trump’s approval ratings running below where most incumbents would want them.
Moran pointed out that Democrats didn’t have the lead one would expect ahead of November’s midterm elections, as Trump’s approval ratings remain low.
Psaki acknowledged that enthusiasm was high for Democrats, but that the party had a hard time presenting itself as something more than anti-Trump. That’s a problem she’s been circling for months without ever quite landing on a solution.
“It has taken some time for a lot of the leading Democratic voices to move from just anti-Trump to more than anti-Trump, right? To, ‘We’re not for Trump, but here’s what we’re offering,'” she said.
Then came the part that caught people’s attention.
Psaki added, “I would also say, to take a little bit of the blame off of leading Democrats, it’s very hard to break through with that stuff.”
“And I realize I have a platform. You have a platform — maybe we’re all at fault for this — but because the things Trump is doing every day are so crazy, it is hard for Democrats to break through with, ‘Here’s my plan for covering children under the age of six with additional health care benefits. Here’s my plan for giving more assistance to pre-K.'” The MSNBC host said it was hard to decide whom she was going to book outside the Trump-focused news reaction and said, “Maybe that’s a mistake.” “So, I think there’s a lot of factors at play here, but a big one is I don’t think the public knows enough about the Democrats’ plans for making their lives better as much as they don’t like Trump,” she said.
Moran agreed and questioned how journalists should approach the issue. “And, you know, he is chaos and dominates every second of every day as much as he can,” he said. “And, so, that does leave any journalist, any program, any independent journalist, broadcast journalist, with the same problem: Do you cover the Trump show, or do you cover the Trump administration and what people should know about it?”
The Problem With Psaki Playing the Victim Here
Let’s be clear about what just happened. Jen Psaki, the host of a nightly MSNBC program with a full production staff, a booking team, and a loyal left-wing audience, just told the world that she can’t figure out how to cover anything other than Donald Trump.
She didn’t get dragged into that admission. She volunteered it.
And the irony runs pretty deep. Psaki spent years as Biden’s press secretary insisting the media ask tougher questions and hold power to account. Now she runs her own show and admits she fills it with Trump-reaction content because that’s what drives her audience. The “maybe we’re all at fault” line is doing a lot of heavy lifting there — it spreads the blame around just enough to avoid the obvious conclusion, which is that MSNBC’s business model depends on Trump outrage the same way a gas station depends on cars.
This isn’t a new problem for Psaki. In April, Psaki told Stephen A Smith she didn’t know why some people on the left were spending so much time talking about invoking the 25th Amendment against President Donald Trump. “I think there are times, I think a lot of people on — and I can’t speak for everybody on the left, I don’t agree with everything everybody says on the left either — you know, sometimes it’s like, not constructive,” Psaki said at the time.
She keeps diagnosing the disease and then going right back to spreading it.
The Democrats’ plans Psaki references — expanded government health coverage for children under six, more pre-K spending — aren’t being ignored because Trump is too loud. They’re being ignored because the American people just watched four years of Democrat governance deliver inflation, open borders, and a foreign policy mess. More government-run programs pitched as solutions to the problems government already created aren’t going to cut through any news cycle, Trump or no Trump.
What This Really Tells You About the Left-Wing Media Machine
Psaki’s candor here is actually useful, even if she didn’t intend it to be.
She is essentially admitting that MSNBC functions as a reaction network — a place where the entire editorial lineup is built around whatever Trump did that morning. That’s not journalism. That’s political programming dressed up with a news set and a chyron. And the audience she’s built expects exactly that, which is why she told Moran she struggles to book anyone outside the Trump-focused reaction circuit.
But here’s the thing Democrats don’t want to say out loud: if your party’s best communicators can’t make the case for your agenda without Trump as a foil, maybe the agenda isn’t as popular as you think. Psaki’s own words confirm what voters showed in November 2024 when they handed Trump a landslide — people weren’t just voting against the Democrat Party, they were voting against the class of media figures and party operatives who told them for years that everything was fine.
Psaki was one of those voices. She stood at the White House podium and told America the border was secure, inflation was transitory, and the Biden administration had everything under control. Now she hosts a nightly show and wonders why the public tunes out Democrat messaging.
And she’s still doing it. The “plans” she wants to break through with — more government health coverage, more pre-K spending — are the same expanded-government proposals that require higher taxes and bureaucratic administration to deliver. Taxpayers fund those programs. Every dollar the government spends on expanded pre-K is a dollar taken out of a family’s paycheck before they ever see it. That’s not a plan for making lives better. That’s a plan for making government bigger.
The midterms are coming, and Democrats are clearly rattled. Psaki’s admission that she can’t figure out how to use her own platform to help them is not a sign of self-awareness — it’s a sign of a party that built its entire post-2020 identity around opposing one man and is now realizing that man won anyway.
And Trump, for his part, keeps right on dominating the news cycle. Not because the media can’t resist covering him, but because what he’s actually doing — securing the border, cutting government spending, pushing back on the permanent Washington establishment — is exactly what the voters who sent him back to Washington asked him to do.
Psaki can book whoever she wants. But until Democrats have something to say beyond “we’re not Trump,” no amount of airtime is going to fix what’s broken.
